SATURDAY AM UPDATE from Box Office Mojo: Illumination and Universal’s The Secret Life of Pets dethroned previous #1 Finding Dory, bringing in an estimated $38.3 million on Friday alone against a $75 million budget, pushing toward a $95+ million opening weekend that could easily top $100 million.
In comparison Inside Out brought in $34.2 million on Friday before opening with $90.4 million and Toy Story 3 kicked off its $110.3 million opening with $41.1 million on Friday. Inside Out is currently the record holder for the largest opening weekend for a non-sequel or franchise based animated property and it appears Secret Life of Pets could easily take that title.
The weekend’s other new wide release is Fox’s Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, which brought in an estimated $6.65 million on Friday against its $33 million budget, which could result in an opening weekend around $16-17 million. Comparatively, films with a R-rating and similar themes like, The Wedding Ringer brought in $6.9 million on Friday and went on to gross just over $20 million, while Sex Tape brought in $5.6 million on Friday before opening with $14.6 million.
The rest of the top five is rounded out by Finding Dory taking in $6.2 million for Friday, with an overall haul of $408.5 million, Legend of Tarzan at $6.1 million, and The Purge:Election Year at $4 million.
