Lets get right into to this. Yesterday I noticed The Ghostbusters Toys were all marked down for clearance at Target stores. The assortment of 6″ figures includes all four female Ghostbusters which originally retail for $19.99 are now $13.98. The villain 6″ figure assortments are also on sale as well and feature Theater Ghost, Rowan, and Stay Puff. Being a fan of the original series and having a daughter I’m looking forward to the new film. I hope it isn’t fan disinterest but, overstock that has resulted in the clearance. It got me thinking though whether if its the “fandom” of the original series that had such disdain for the trailer and production of the reboot responding by not buying the toys or is it simply bad placement. In all of the Target stores I visited, the toys which are of the all female cast are placed in the Boys action figure aisle in between the hugely popular Five Nights At Freddy’s Toys and equally popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Toys. There is no presence in the girls section or the girl’s clothing section either, whereas there were t-shirts in the boys section. I think the merchandise is marketed incorrectly. If the all female cast is the selling point, why not place the merchandise in the girls’ sections and own the strong female representation of the characters. Either way My Daughter now has more Ghostbusters toys.
