The character of Marion Crane has been cast for the fifth and final season of Bates Motel. R&B Singer and actress Rihanna has been cast.
It’s not known if the character will undergo alterations for modern audiences further or how large an arc she will have. The role of Marion will be changed for this contemporary setting. In the original Hitchcock film (1960) , she arrived at the Bates Motel while on the run for stealing a large sum of cash from the bank she was employed, and it’s the investigation into her disappearance that alerts authorities to Norman’s serial killer tendencies. The original Marion Crane was portrayed famously by Janet Leigh, mother to future scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis (1978 Halloween). It’ll be interesting to see when the character shows up within the season. Executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin had this to say about their casting choice:
“We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way. We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate.”
Production on Bates Motel Season 5 begins in Vancouver this fall and will air on A&E in 2017.
