With Star Wars Land set to open in both Disneyland in Anaheim, CA and Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, FL in 2019, what does it mean for the future of Star Wars Celebration, the official Star Wars Convention?
Star Wars Celebration is being held in Orlando this year and next year if it sticks to the model will be overseas either in Japan or Europe. Then in 2019 it will be stateside again. Only this time it will coincide with a designated themed land opening in both stateside locations to hold Celebration in recent years, Orlando and Anaheim. I believe Disney will capitalize on this by holding the conventions directly at the park with spaces already factored into the design of the 14-acre Star Wars Land. In doing so they will be effectively cutting out the city convention centers and local hotels while boosting their profits by forcing fans to double dip (pay for convention access and admission to the park), not to mention Disney resorts or hotels in order to experience Celebration going forward. This plan seems to be already in the works this year.
Now that Star Wars Weekends are gone and with Celebration taking place in Orlando this year, Disney has announced Galactic Nights at Disney Hollywood Studios. The event takes place on April 14, 2017 (7:00 PM to midnight)! That’s the second night of Celebration and admission is $129 per person for 5 hours of access. Usually at Celebration or any other Comic Convention there are after parties and yes they are separately ticketed events but I don’t recall any with a hefty price of $129. Is this taking the place of after parties or is it foreshadowing of whats to come?
I believe this is their way of conditioning fans into paying more for what they used to pay less. Yes you get the rides with a convention, but what if you just want the convention? I know it sounds like I’m complaining, it’s just food for thought. I mean come on I’ll be one of the first ones in line. I also believe Celebration will be held at both parks in the same year either individually at different times of the year or simultaneously. This would coincide with the rumor that we will eventually get two Star Wars films a year and would give plenty of content and celebrities to visit both parks.
