With the announcement of a live-action Nightwing film in active development and added to DC Extended Universe slate of films, we have to decided to look back at the other films (albeit animation) to include or reference Nightwing.
Dick Grayson as Nightwing has appeared in several DC Universe Animated Original Movies. He appeared in the 2010 film Batman: Under The Red Hood, voiced by Neil Patrick Harris. He first appears to patrol Gotham alongside Batman, offering help when Batman finds himself fighting a group of smugglers. However Nightwing is sidelined after their first encounter with the Red Hood (Jason Todd, formerly a Robin), where he sustains an injury to his leg that causes him to sit out the final confrontation between Batman and Red Hood.
In the 2014 film Son of Batman, Nightwing returns this time with
Sean Maher voicing the character. He intervenes to stop Damian Wayne (Batman’s titular son with Talia Al Ghul, and eventual Robin) from killing a severely wounded and defeated Ubu (League of Assassins traitor).
After a prolonged off-screen battle (few shots of which are shown during the credits), Nightwing subdues and ties up the boy, not without injury though having sustained a number of sizable sword cuts. He pilots the Batwing to rescue Batman, Talia and Damian at the climax of the film.
In the follow-up to Son of Batman, 2015’s Batman vs. Robin, Nightwing (Maher) returns to help train Damian (now Robin) while Batman is busy investigating the Court of Owls.
Dick is dating Starfire (former Titans colleague) in this film. She calls him and tries to entice him to come over to her place. We see he refers to her as “Kori”, as we see her corresponding redhead contact image on his phone.
In 2016’s Batman: Bad Blood the sequel to Batman vs. Robin, Nightwing (Maher) is forced to take up the mantle of Batman and don the spare costume during the time Bruce Wayne is missing.
Nightwing is assisted by Damian Wayne’s Robin, Batwoman (Cassandra Cain), and Batwing ( Lucius Fox’s son, Luke) . He later helps Batman snap out of the conditioning Tailia put him through in which made him a lethal adversary. Through a phone conversation between him and Starfire, it is inferred that Dick’s patrols of Blüdhaven have kept them from being intimate for some time.
Nightwing also appears briefly in Justice League vs. Teen Titans. In it he confronts Starfire, whom he has had an ongoing relationship.
He will also return for its sequel Teen Titans: The Judas Contract due out April 18, 2017.
Just recently in The LEGO Batman Movie, Robin (Dick Grayson) dons albeit briefly a Batsuit in the Batcave from carousel of costumes labeled the “Nightwing” suit during the Joker’s reign over Wayne Manor, while Batman is imprisoned in the Phantom Zone.
What will the live-action version of Nightwing be like? With Warner Bros. Pictures developing a live-action film centered on the character, and The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay in negotiations to helm. We will soon find out.
