Warner Bros. has released a CHIPS red-band trailer. The film stars Dax Shepard (who also wrote/directed) and Michael Pena as California Highway Patrol officer Jon Baker and Undercover FBI Agent Frank “Ponch” Poncherello, respectively. Together, the new partners investigate a heist that may have inside ties to their department. Hijinks ensue.
CHIPS like the upcoming Baywatch are both R-rated comedies based on cheesy TV series. The both are trying to hit the high mark that that 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street established. That’s a hard mark to hit. The film feels akin to the 2004 film Starsky and Hutch also distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Hopefully it offers more jokes than what is on display here (so that not all are ruined). With the talents of Shepard and Pena this movie could be great. This trailer is definitely NSFW. It features not one, but two jokes about eating ass.
Check out the CHIPS red-band trailer below. The film also stars Rosa Salazar, Adam Brody, Kristen Bell, and Vincent D’Onofrio. CHIPS opens March 24th.
Here’s the official synopsis for CHIPS:
Jon Baker (Shepard) and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello (Peña) have just joined the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Los Angeles but for very different reasons. Baker is a beaten up pro motorbiker trying to put his life and marriage back together. Poncherello is a cocky undercover Federal agent investigating a multi-million dollar heist that may be an inside job—inside the CHP.
The inexperienced rookie and hardened pro are teamed together, but clash more than click, so kickstarting a partnership is easier said than done. But with Baker’s bike skills combined with Ponch’s street savvy it might just work…if they don’t drive each other crazy along the way.
